14 Jan ASZK ANNUAL AWARDS – NOW CLOSED

The ASZK is excited to launch new awards covering the 12 month period of 1 January – 31 December 2015.

These awards are open to all members of ASZK.

Submissions close 30 March 2016 and will be judged by an independent panel of zoo professionals.

The Awards will be announced at the Annual Conference Dinner in May.

 

Zookeeper of the Year

This award is open for an individual ASZK member whom is currently employed as a zoo keeper. This individual will have displayed outstanding aptitude and dedication to a level that goes well above and beyond expectation in every aspect of their role as a modern day zookeeper.

  • Must be nominated by section supervisor or above
  • Must be signed off by a senior manager of the organization for which the keeper works
  • Must be a written nomination with a minimum of 250 words outlining why the individual stands out from all others.
  • For outstanding achievement in the profession of zoo keeping encompassing the many varied duties expected from modern day keepers. Areas could include, but are not limited to – animal husbandry, training and enrichment, exhibit maintenance, design and construction, animal records, animal presentations, customer service, media, responsibilities, innovation, teamwork and leadership.

 

Innovation Award

This award is open to both individual members of ASZK, or a team of keepers of which at least one person is an ASZK member or the institution is a corporate member.

This award recognizes the requirement of keepers to be constantly seeking improvement in the care of their animals and the way they do their jobs often through innovative ideas.

Innovation may be any area of zookeeping including but not limited to:

  • Enrichment
  • Training
  • Husbandry
  • Nutrition
  • Exhibit design/renovation
  • Research
  • List name of nominee, position, institution’s name, address, phone, and the recommendation of a supervisor, peer or colleague with their contact details.
  • List and document the details of the innovation and the impact it has made on the care of the animals or duties of the keepers.

 

Service to Industry – Heidi Hellingman Award

This award is open to individual members of ASZK or institutions for outstanding achievement in the Zoo industry. This can either be within the past year or for individuals who have contributed to the industry over a long period of time.

Examples of achievements include developing husbandry techniques, training, breeding programs, educational programs and facility development.

  • List name of nominee, position, institution’s name, address, phone, and the recommendation of a supervisor, peer or colleague.
  • List and document the details of the contribution this person or team has made.

 

Outstanding student/trainee Zookeeper of the year

This award is open to individual ASZK members who are currently students or trainee keepers. This individual will have displayed outstanding aptitude and dedication to learning and implementing the skills required to be a professional zoo keeper.

  • Must be nominated by section supervisor or above
  • Must be signed off by a senior manager of organization for which the trainee works or volunteers
  • Must be a written nomination with a minimum of 250 amount of words outlining why the individual stands out from all others.

 

Conservation Award

This award is open to individual members of ASZK or institutions for outstanding achievement in the area of conservation.

The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding keeper-initiated contributions to conservation of wildlife and their habitats. It is hoped that recognition of outstanding efforts by keepers to contribute to conservation will provide incentive to keepers to continue to be leaders in this important endeavor

  • List name, position, institution’s name, address, phone, and the recommendation of a supervisor, peer or colleague.
  • List and document the details of the contribution this person or team has made to conservation.

 

Selection Procedure

The Awards Committee, will independently review each nominee.
